Jiang was my favorite character when he was introduced. I rarely feel for the second male lead when they play as unrequited love but Jiang held my heart. For the first half of the show, although I liked Pan Yue, I often found myself wishing for Jiang to have his feelings returned.

I admit I am biased to darker morally grey male leads who still have a sense of morality and respect. While Pan Yue technically fits that in a sense, it’s something about the fact that Jiang, while actually a caring person to those close to him, is feared by everyone (still understandable considering the whole not afraid to kill and being a leader of a powerful faction but still). The scene where he is try to held Caiwei by talking to the girls and trying to be nice and offer a candy but the woman holds back her older sister genuinely made me sad. Li Ge Yang did such a good job making me feel for this man that clearly was trying to be kind in a genuine way only to have his efforts rejected. It was the same feeling I got when Caiwei got distracted and didn’t see his confession with the lantern. The longing and bitterness of seeing his moment unrealized was palpable.

Another reason the unrequited second male lead role never bothered me in this was because of how respectful Jiang was written. Did he get jealous of moments Pan Yue and his time with Caiwei? Yes. Did he interrupt Pan Yue’s moments to divert Caiwei’s attention to himself? Yes. But he never felt toxic about it. He did not let the jealousy ever compromise his efforts in helping them seek justice. Something that usually really bothers me is when an unrequited love interest can’t take no for an answer. This was handled really well with Jiang for me. Even when Caiwei got drunk crying over Pan Yue who she clearly loves, Jiang has that realization that he may never be that for her as much as he wants that. Him pulling his hand back when she passed out was mature and respectful. Shortly after that he confesses and he respects her direct rejection. He still shows his care for her later, probably in some hope she would see him differently, but he doesn’t push or even expect more from her. It’s enough to still be her friend and someone she can rely on.

I was really hoping he would get a happy ending as after after a while Xiaosheng started to grow on me with her interactions with him. Their scenes gave Jiang a different kind of feeling to his character. While he was always kind and treated Caiwei special, seeing Jiang able to have sweet normal interactions with Xiaosheng made him feel more human in a sense. He also deserved to have someone as ride or die as Xiaosheng. It was unfortunate when I remembered I had seen the grave scene of Xiaosheng before I decided to start the show and it was around ep 19/20 that I remembered. Even if I hadn’t seen that spoiler, it would’ve been clear to me in ep 26 that Jiang was going to have a sad end when he killed his mark ruthlessly to infiltrate the organization. If it was just the murder I may have still thought he could survive but once they showed the young son come out of the carriage to cry over his fathers body and say he wanted to seek revenge I knew there was no coming back. It was paralleled too well with Jiang’s current goal and the destruction he was willing to leave behind.

I cried at his death and again when we got to see what he willingly endured when he knew he wasn’t going to escape. I wish he could’ve had a happy ending but I’m glad his end still felt respectful to his character and his last efforts were still to help those he loved while also fulfilling what he was unable to achieve alone.
